A Bloomsburg University student is in the Columbia County Jail after being accused of assaulting an out – of – town man earlier this month. Bloomsburg police tell us 21 – year old Corey Winkler of Sparta, New Jersey... allegedly assaulted 21 – year old Michael Walsh of New Milford during the early morning hours of November 12th. Police finding Walsh at the rear of student housing at 385 Lightstreet Road. Walsh remains in the intensive care unit of Geisinger. Winkler is facing a long list of charges and remains in prison on $50,000 bail.
A Catawissa – area man is in critical condition at Geisinger Medical Center in Danville... after his clothing got caught in a shaft drive at his feed mill Monday morning. 31 - year old Jeff Mummey, Jr. was apparently attempting to loosen some grain when his clothing became caught by a piece of machinery at Shamrock Mills in Shamokin Township... near Paxinos. The Press – Enterprise is reporting in Tuesday's edition... Mummey was pulled from the equipment by emergency workers... who had LifeFlight whisk him to GMC. Mummey has operated the business for the past year.
Berwick Firemen were called out overnight to douse hot spots which remained from a garage fire in the 400 block of East 11th Street. A Monday afternoon fire leveled the three bay garage. The Press – Enterprise is reporting in today's edition that the fire was discovered around 1:30. Berwick Fire Chief Bill Coolbaugh says the blaze does not appear to be suspicious.
Bloomsburg Town Council is in the middle of preparing their operating budget for 2012. The proposed spending plan is coming from two sources... a $4.2 million dollar proposal from Mayor Dan Knorr... and one totaling $4.6 million being proposed by Council. Councilman – elect Eric Bower says both plans are well thought out.
AGAPE / Toys
AGAPE of Bloomsburg... on 7th street is now collecting toys for the innocent victims of September's flooding. The organization's Kathy Lowe telling us the group is accepting new, unwrapped toys through the 10th of December. Ms. Lowe say toy distribution will take place a week later at former Bloomsburg Mills Warehouse on 6th Street.
The Bloomsburg Theater Ensemble's 23rd annual TreeFest gets underway this weekend at the Caldwell Consistory on the square in Bloomsburg. The event features 142 highly decorated Christmas Trees. The yearly program is made possible by area Christmas Tree growers who donate the trees. The trees are decorated... and will be given to families in time for the holidays.
Residents of Hazleton could see a 12% increase in property taxes under a proposed 2012 budget. Council... Monday night... adopted the measure 3 – to - 1 during a first reading. Hazleton City Council has until the end of next month to approve the spending plan.
Police near Hazleton are looking for a masked man who allegedly held up the manager of a convenience store over the weekend while making a deposit. The incident happened at the PNC Bank on Route 93 in Hazle Township. Police say that's when the woman encountered the robber... who shot her in the face and the back of the head with a BB gun... grabbing the money. Investigators have surveillance video of the suspect. Anyone with information about the robbery are asked to call police.
Southern / Old Forge
After winning their 4th straight District 4 championship, the Southern Columbia High School football team plays District 2 champion Old Forge this Friday. The teams to square off at Kemp Memorial Stadium in Shamokin in a first round Class A state playoff game. Old Forge has a record of 10 and 2 while Southern Columbia is 11 and 1. Friday's game begins at 7 O'clock. You can hear it on Classic Rock 103.5 starting with the pregame show at 6:30.
