Columbia County Election

Election night 2011 is over and there are some candidates re-elected.... but there is a new face among the crowd. In complete, but unofficial returns.... in the hotly contested race for Columbia County Commissioner.... incumbent Republican Chris Young won re-election... getting 34% of the vote. Also winning re-election to his commission seat was Democrat David Kovach of Berwick. He received 26 % of the ballots cast in the race. And a new face will join Young and Kovach come January. He is Republican Rich Ridgway.... receiving 22 % of the vote.


Columbia County DA

In the race for Columbia County District Attorney... Republican Tom Leipold easily outdistanced Democrat Leslie Bryden 63 to 36 %. Leipold replaces Gary Norton... who was unopposed on both the Republican and Democratic tickets for a Columbia – Montour County judgeship.


Montour County DA

In Montour County... Rebecca Warren easily won the seat of District Attorney. She defeated Tim Bowers as she got 78 % of the ballots cast in Tuesday's election.


Bloomsburg Town Council

Even though it was an off year election.... there were several races at the local level. In the race for three open seats on Bloomsburg Town Council... political newcomer Eric Bower and veteran council member Diane Levan each gathered 27 % of the votes cast on Tuesday... while former Fair President Fred Trump received 25 %. Barry Thorne receiving 18 % of the vote.


Berwick Council

Berwick Borough Council will see a fresh face or two. Alvin Hill was the top vote getter garnering 22 % of the ballots cast... followed by Joanne Huntington with 19 %... and Arden Oliver... also with 19 %. Vickey Walton Fish... and Scott Bower rounded out the field.


Hazleton Election

Elections were held in Luzerne County on Tuesday. In unofficial returns.... Republican incumbent Mayor Joseph Yannuzzi retained his seat over challenger... Democrat Grace Cuozzo. Unofficially... there was only a 158 vote difference. Independent John Medashefski finished a distant third.


Luzerne County DA

There will be a new District Attorney in Luzerne County come January. In unofficial returns... Republican Stefanie Salavantis has defeated incumbent D-A Jackie Musto Carroll. Just over a thousand votes separated the two candidates. Salavantis will serve a four year term... earning $168,000 dollars a year.



The scandal involving former Penn State University defensive coordinator Jerry Sandusky is starting to take it's toll. Sandusky... indicted last week on charges that he allegedly sexually assaulted eight young boys between 1994 and 2009. Already the Universities Athletic Director and V-P of Business have been causalities.... and many believe with eroding support from the school's board of trustees.... head football coach Joe Paterno will either be asked to retire... or outright fired... when the board meets on Friday.



How far can you stretch 189 – thousand dollars among flood victims. Faith – based AGAPE of Bloomsburg is getting ready to find out. That's the amount of money they have... all donated from outside sources. Appearing on the Tuesday edition of the WHLM Morning Buzz... AGAPE's Kathy Lowe says applications are available at AGAPE on 7th Street... as well as the WHLM Studios on East Main Street.


Nuremberg Fatal

A Nuremberg man is dead following a crash earlier this week. 32 – year old Travis Johnson's pick up truck ran off Tomhicken Road in Sugarloaf Township... and slammed into some trees. The accident happened west of the Tomhicken Post Office. Police say Johnson was not wearing his seatbelt. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
