It's election day across Columbia and Montour Counties.... as well as the state of Pennsylvania. The polls are open from 7 AM through 8 PM... and weather-wise... it should be a pretty decent day. On the ballot... races for municipal elections. The races with the most interest in Columbia County is that for District Attorney. Tom Leipold faces Leslie Bryden. The other hotly contest race is that for county commission where incumbents Chris Young and David Kovach... are faced by challengers Rich Ridgway and Earl Mordan. Three out of the four will be elected. There are also council elections for the Bloomsburg and Berwick.
Two months ago many of us didn't know what Bloomsburg – based AGAPE was.... now we know it as a faith – based group that came through feeding thousands of people... pulling mud out of hundreds of homes following the September floods. AGAPE was organized two years ago... but it was the Columbia County Commissioner's kicked it into high gear during the floods making it the volunteer clearing house for everything flood recovery related.
Penn State Scandal
Two high ranking Penn State administrators have been arraigned in that sex abuse case involving former PSU football defensive coordinator Jerry Sandusky. Former Athletic director Tim Curley and former V-P of Business Gary Schultz were arraigned in a Harrisburg courtroom on Monday... charged with failing to report the abuse of eight children allegedly by Sandusky. Meantime... state Attorney General Linda Kelley says PSU head coach Joe Paterno is not a target of the on-going investigation.
Main Twp. Accident
The investigation is ongoing into a one car crash Monday afternoon in Main Township which injured two people. State Police say 22 – year old Jonathan Woll of Bloomsburg was westbound on East Hillcrest... when he failed to negotiate a curve... and struck two utility poles with his car. The Lincoln Mark 7 flipped over... tossing Woll from the car... and trapping a passenger inside. Woll and 21 – year old Alysa Karpa were rush to Geisinger Medical Center for treatment of injuries.
Some senior citizens in Danville are being targeted by some scam artists. Police Chief Eric Gill telling WHLM News that they're investigating cases of individuals approaching the elderly... offing to assist with their grocery's. That's when the trouble begins. While doing so... those involved are making off with the person's wallet... or cash. If you have information about the scam... call Danville Police at 275 – 1911.
A Sunbury woman has been charged with allegedly stealing a Geisinger Medical Center shuttle bus late last month. The Press – Enterprise is reporting in today's edition that 40 – year old Paula Clinton confessed to making off with the 25 passenger bus... and parking it at a garage in Point Township... then hitch – hiking to her home. Clinton faces a preliminary hearing on the 17th.
W-B Twp Fire Chief
The Wilkes – Barre Township Volunteer fire chief has been arrested after he assaulted his ex – girlfriend's companion. John Yuknavich is accused severely assaulting a man... pulling his ex – gal pal out of the car... and threatening to shoot both of them. Yuknavich was arrested and later charged with simple assault... terroristic threats... theft and harassment.
The Zoning Board of Butler Township... near Hazleton... meets this week to resolve an issue facing a popular restaurant near the intersection of State Route 309 and the Freeland – Drums Highway. The board says the restaurant doesn't have enough parking spaces for the number seats inside Bobby's of New York. But the building owner contends there is enough parking... and is appealing other alleged zoning ordinances.
