A visit to Washington this week by Bloomsburg civic and political leaders has grabbed the attention of our Senate and congressional delegation. It deals with a proposed flood wall around the west end of Bloomsburg... all in an effort to prevent the massive flooding received two months ago. Columbia – Montour Chamber of Commerce President Fred Gaffney says the issue is now on the front burner.
Bloomsburg Firemen were out of their quarters early Friday morning. Shortly after 12:30 Friday morning... they were called to the Kawneer Company on East 12th Street to check on a piece of machinery that caught fire. Kawneer employees were able to extinguish the flames... and drag the piece of equipment out of the building. Bloomsburg firemen were able to return to their quarters roughly 40 minutes after the initial alarm sounded.
Bloomsburg firemen were called to a Route 11 restaurant Thursday night in an effort to determine what caused a smell of smoke. The Press – Enterprise is reporting in today's edition... firemen searched Applebee's Restaurant... even using thermal cameras.... but they couldn't find the cause of the smell... although it was initially suspected to be coming from the bar area. The restaurant manager saying the business will remain closed until an electrician arrives to track down the problem.
A spectacular accident last night in the westbound lane of Interstate 80... near the Love's truck stop in Mifflin Township. State Police telling us.. 53 – year old Robert Yuhas of Duryea lost control of his big rig... striking a guard rail... hitting other objects as it rolled down the embankment... before coming to rest against a construction storage trailer. State Police say Yuhas was taken to Geisinger Medical Center where he was treated for minor injuries.
A 56 – year old South Florida trucker is in the Columbia County Prison after he allegedly assaulted a woman in the parking lot of the Giant Supermarket in Briar Creek Township this week. State Police at Bloomsburg say Fabio Henao followed a woman to her car... and when she started to get in... the man allegedly embraced and fondled her. The woman calling police... who arrested Henao in the supermarket's parking lot near his truck.
Power has been restored to an estimated 36 – hundred Pennsylvania Power and Light subscribers in Hazle Township.... Hazleton and West Hazleton. Homeowners losing their juice around 5:30 Thursday afternoon. PPL has yet to say what caused the outage.
A PA State Trooper has waived his right to a preliminary hearing in one of two DUI cases he's charged with. 47 – year old Bernerd Kizis of Fairview Township... in Luzerne County... is taking his case to court stemming from a July DUI arrest. Authorities say his blood alcohol content was point - 36... when the state's legal limit it point – 08. Meantime... Kizis was arrested in September in Hanover Township... on a second DUI charge. He remains on the job... doing restricted duty until the cases are resolved.
The 2011 High School Football regular season came to a close this weekend. On the WHLM Stations Friday night Bloomsburg beat backyard rival Central Columbia 48-21. On 103.5 WHLM-FM Berwick defeated Hazleton 30-21. In other local action it was Danville over Warrior Run 42-21, Southern Columbia over Selinsgrove 42-0, and Thursday night Columbia Montour Vo-Tech fell to Northwest 56-0.
