The effects of the weekend's snow storm are still being felt across the state. An estimated 66,000 PPL customers remain without power Tuesday morning. That's down from the estimated 300,000 at the height of the late October snow storm on Saturday. Of that number... only a hand full of subscribers are without juice in Columbia, Montour and Luzerne Counties. However, the hardest hit areas remains Lehigh, Northampton and Lancaster Counties. PPL says power may not be restored in those areas until later this week.
Red Cross / Danville
We're slowly turning our attention from the flooding of eight weeks ago... into the holiday season. And the Danville Chapter of the American Red Cross is keeping up with the seasons... still attempting to collect blood for regional hospitals.... so says executive director Deanna Hollenbach. She says during the holiday season... blood supplies run low... and that's the times accidents occur.
It's been nearly two months since the floods of September devastated the region... an event that will take some time to recovery from. Bloomsburg University... both students and employees... continue to pitch in... so says BU President Dr. David Soltz. He says it's all part of a volunteer effort to bring the region back to pre – flood condition.
The five week corruption trial of former State Representative Brett Feese of Lycoming County... could go to the jury Tuesday. Feese is charged with theft... conspiracy... as well as conflict of interest allegedly after misusing millions of taxpayers dollars in order to manipulate GOP campaigns. A former legislative aid is also on trial with former Representative Feese.
Doing some midweek traveling.... you'll be happy to know... gas prices across northeastern Pennsylvania continue to fall... or even hold steady. The Triple A fuel gauge report out Tuesday morning shows the average price of a gallon of self – serve, unleaded regular is $3.45... the same as Monday... and down a penny from the weekend. Last week at this time... we were paying an average of $3.48 cents a gallon.
The Federal Courts have ordered a former Shamokin mail carrier pay $300 for not delivering roughly 3,000 circulars that were found at his home. In addition... 40 – year old Robert Hogan was ordered to pay a $200 fine. Hogan was originally charged with... what was called... “quitting and deserting commercial circulars” from July through September of 2010. He pleaded guilty to the charge last July.
Still not complete... an investigation into a crash late last week which killed one high school student... and injured two others in Carbon County... just south of Hazleton. State police say they need... and want... more answers into the death of 17 – year old Carl Bittner of Weatherly. The accident happened on Wetzel Run Road in Packer Township. Troopers say Bittner was a passenger in a sports car driven by a friend.
If you live along the Susquehanna River in Luzerne County... will you soon have to pay more for flood protection?? That's the question the County's Flood Protection Authority wants to answer. 14,000 property owners are now charged six different annual fees. Some city leaders... such as Kingston... believe the current fees do not reflect reality.
