Crews from Pennsylvania Power and Light continue to work in order to restore power to homes and businesses across their 29 county service area. The outages aren't as numerous in Columbia and Montour counties... as compared to other areas of service. At last check... an estimated 74 subscribers are without juice this morning in Columbia County. Many of the outages in Roaring Creek and Locust Township. Only 20 subscribers were without power in Montour County. System wide... an estimated 120,000 customers are without power.... down from the estimated 200,000 without juice over the weekend.
All of Catawissa was in the dark Saturday evening. The power went out around 5:30.... plunging the entire borough into darkness. Power was restored at 7:55. An apparent downed power pole was the culprit. Catawissa operates it's own power system... separate from the PPL grid.
Tuesday is the last day to get an absentee ballot in order to vote in November's general election. Although it's a bit late to have one mailed to your address... you could stop by the Voter Registrar's office at the Court House annex on West Main in Bloomsburg to get one. But there is a deadline to return that ballot according to Columbia County Chief Registrar Matt Rapasky... and that is November 4th. The generation election is Tuesday, November 8th.
A couple of thousand people lined the route of march for last night's 104th annual Catawissa Halloween parade. Despite the bone chilling cold... they sat at curbside with lawn chairs and blankets... one person telling me the parade is what she waits for each year. Now... plans will get underway soon for the 105th annual Catawissa Halloween Parade.
Trick or Treat
It's a big night for ghosts and goblins to be out on the street trick or treating. Bloomsburg... Benton... and Scott Township will have trick or treating starting at 6 O'clock. Danville is also in the Halloween spirit tonight.... allowing trick or treating... since Saturday night's event had to be postponed due to the inclement weather. As per usual... area police department's warning drivers to watch out for the kids... since many Halloween costumes cut down on the vision of kids out on the streets... and many of the costumes may be dark.
There were a number of traffic accidents in Columbia County over the weekend due to snowy conditions... including a fatal wreck. That happened Saturday during the storm. State Police at Bloomsburg say 22 – year old Tricia Shutt of Elysburg lost control of her SUV on State route 487... near Catawissa... and slammed into a tree. The road was slippery at the time. Authorities say Ms. Shutt was pronounced dead at the scene.
Three people have been arrested and charged in the robbery of a conveniencecececece store and gas station at the Dorrance exit of Interstate 81. 27 – year old Kaelin Kovalski... 25 – year old Jolene Vonglis and 38 – year old Brian Stemple... all of White Haven... have been charged with robbery. All remain in the Luzerne County Correctional Facility on 100 -thousand dollars bond each.
Red Light Camera's
Hazleton Mayor Joe Yannuzzi says he favors a move to install red light cameras at city stop lights. He says it's a way to cut down on red light runners... and to curb aggressive driving. Last week... the state senate okayed a measure giving third class cities... such as Hazleton and Wilkes – Barre the ability to install the red light cameras. Before the camera come to fruition... a similar bill in the state house must be adopted.
