Flood Stories

There is a new... fresh set of stories from last month's flood being produced by Bloomsburg High School Students. Brandon Conrad and his associates are talking to people who had to deal with the stresses of the rising water on an hourly basis. The group stopped by the studio's of WHLM on Wednesday to video tape the radio station's story. Conrad said documenting the event is important. The series of interviews will soon be published on the internet.

 

Road Contract

PennDOT says a contract has been awarded to Wolyniec Construction of Williamsport for flood repair to two roads in Montour and Northumberland Counties.

The agency's Rick Mason says both locations involve large drainage pipe replacement on Ridge Drive in Montour County.... and on Irish Valley Road in Northumberland County. The pipes were heavily damaged due to run off from September flooding. The 274 – thousand dollar contract is scheduled to be completed by early December.

 

Danville Meeting

A major meeting on tap Monday in Danville... as representatives of FEMA and the Small Business Administration discuss what federal disaster assistance is available. The meeting begins at 9 AM at the Danville City Hall. The session occurs just two weeks before the deadline comes to an end to apply for assistance.

 

Disaster Relief Center's

The mission of the Disaster Recovery Center in Schuylkill and Snyder counties are just about over. As a matter of fact... they'll be closing their doors for good this Friday. The DRC's... such as the one on Sawmill Road near Lightstreet... were opened days after the water receded from last month's floods. The center in Schuylkill County at the Pine Grove fire hall.... and that in the Career Link Center in Selinsgrove in Snyder County... will remain open from 10 AM through 7 PM.... until Friday.

 

Berwick United Way

The Berwick United Way's annual fall campaign drive has a little less than a month to run. The campaign is used to fully or partially fund 14 partner agencies in the greater Berwick Area. Executive Director Joy McGinnis has a pretty simple pitch for prospective donors.... simply talking about donating a dollar a paycheck. The Berwick United Way Campaign runs through November 18th.

 

Parents Weekend

The Town of Bloomsburg is expected to be fairly crowded this weekend. Families of Bloomsburg University students will get to sample campus life during this year’s annual Parents’ Weekend. The event begins at midday Friday... and runs through Sunday. The weekend will include athletic events, professional entertainment and recreational opportunities. BU President David Soltz will welcome family members during an open forum Saturday... at the Kehr Union Fireside Lounge.

 

Dushore Break in

Police say their continuing an investigation into the break in of the Dushore Pharmacy in neighboring Sullivan County. One thing police have is surveillance video. They say... what appears to be two men in hoodies... broke into the store early Tuesday morning. The owner of the store completing an inventory of the prescription drugs to see what was stolen at the Dushore Pharmacy in Sullivan County.

 

State Bridges

A report out by Transportation for America says more than 22 – million motorists traveling through the state... are driving over structurally deficient bridges every day. According to the Washington, D.C. – based coalition dealing with transportation reform.... Pennsylvania was number one for having the most bridges in need of significant maintenance... repair or replacement. The state of Oklahoma is second in the nation when it comes to bad bridges.

 

Fracking Water

How safe is treated drilling water... not very.... so says a published report. Jason Conrad.... a former Marcellus Shale field worker near Dimmock... in Susquehanna County... was found guilty this week by a district justice on a disorderly conduct charge after he placed used drilling water in a glass container. Another worker came along... and although the jar was labeled “do not use...” that worker grabbed the container and proceeded to make a pot of coffee. The unnamed worker became ill with intestinal problems.

 

Match 6 Winner

Luzerne County has a new multi – millionaire. The state lottery office in Harrisburg says an unidentified 62 – year old Wilkes – Barre man will receive a jackpot of 4.2 - million dollars for getting all the numbers correct on Monday's Match 6 drawing. The man used a quick pick to select the winning numbers. The ticket was sold at the Anthracite Newsstand on Public Square.... which will receive $10,000 dollars for selling the winning ticket.

 

Couple Pleads Out

The couple charged by Hazleton Police for leaving their young daughter in an apartment by herself before it caught fire... has signed a plea deal in the case. Police say Pablo Chirre and Silvia Elisa Sanchez Diaz pleaded to a charge of endangering the welfare of a child in Luzerne County Court. That's a first – degree misdemeanor. Chirre and Diaz getting two years probation. The child was discovered when a fire broke out in January after the couple left the toddler by herself in an apartment at South Laurel and West Elm Streets.
