Residents of the town of Bloomsburg... will have an opportunity to talk about recent flooding across the town during a special council meeting Tuesday night. Town officials want to hear the good, the bad and the ugly with the actions of the town... so says Mayor Dan Knorr. That special meeting takes place starting at 6 O'clock... Tuesday night... at the Bloomsburg Fire Hall at Market and 9th Streets.
Faith – based AGAPE of Bloomsburg has a hefty donation from a major Columbia County business that has given in the past. The Kawneer Company through the Alcoa Foundation... donating $10,000 Monday afternoon to help AGAPE's mission
Applications will be accepted Tuesday and Wednesday as two local groups continue their quest to give away portions of a $100,000 gift for flood relief by former Bloomsburg resident Gary Hock. Attorney Jack Mihalik says Wesley United Methodist Church and the Bloomsburg Area Community Foundation will take applications... this Tuesday and Wednesday... at the Bloomsburg YMCA starting at 5:30 PM. But now, they're expanding their area of eligibility to flood victims in South Centre... and Scott Township. Also included are flood victims of the Town of Bloomsburg.. Montour and Hemlock Townships. The 500-dollar grants are to be used by flood victims who lost personal items to the water.
A town hall meeting held Monday night in Hazleton by congressman Lou Barletta turned nasty. As the former Hazleton mayor attempted to explain his goals while in Washington... people in the audience started interrupting the answers to questions. That's the same thing that happened to the freshman republican during a town hall in Espy... in Scott Township last spring. This was Mr. Barletta's first public session since announcing two months ago... he was eliminating town hall – style meetings.
The name of a Freeland businessman will now show up on the November 8th general election ballot for Luzerne County Council. 52 – year old Michael Lacey... a pharmacist... replaces Betsy Summers who says she'll direct her energy in a run for Wilkes – Barre Mayor. In addition to Lacey... Libertarian candidate Tim Mullen and Brian Bergman will also be on the fall ballot.
The State Department of Education says the Crestwood School District is one of a half – dozen in Northeastern Pennsylvania to surpass state and national averages on the Scholastic Aptitude Test. Crestwood students had an average SAT Score of 1,091.... while Hazleton Area School District students averaged 901 on the SAT's
Ever since the rain of tropical storm Lee stopped last month... then producing flooding... we have been under a presidential Disaster Declaration. Now that declaration has been expanded to provide public assistance for Columbia County. County Emergency Management coordinator Larry Lahiff... telling us the assistance is designed to provide disaster and financial aid to municipalities... public utilities... fire companies... schools and some non – profit organizations. Lahiff says an application meeting will be held Thursday night... starting at 7 O'clock... at the Bloomsburg High School on 11th Street.

If you use Interstate 80 in Montour County... you may be faced with a traffic trouble spot this week. PennDOT's Rick Mason says a short-term lane closure is in effect in the westbound direction from mile markers 216 to 220 from now through noon time Friday. There is a vehicle width restriction of 14 feet for this section. Mason says a contractor will be sawing and sealing joints, and installing rumble strips.
