Montour Murder Trial
Montour County District Attorney Bob Buehner says he's getting ready to go to trial in the criminal homicide case of 33 – year old Westley Wise. Wise is accused in the stabbing death of girlfriend... 26 – year old Jessica Frederick in their Danville home last January. Buehner says he expects the trial to begin starting in December. Wise remains in the Montour County Prison.
If you wanted to vote in the November 8th general election... and you didn't register... you're out of luck since voter registration closed at midnight Tuesday. Columbia County chief registrar Matt Rapasky telling WHLM News... registration between democrats and republicans is pretty much split down the middle... with an estimated 17,000 Republication and and Democrats registered. Toss in roughly 6,500 non – party affiliation voters... as well as the Green party and other splinter parties... and that makes an estimated 41,000 people eligible to vote in the November election.
Tuesday was the last day to register to vote in the November 8th general election... and now Luzerne County officials says new voter registration is off somewhat... from where it was back 2007. Despite the downward trend... Director of Elections Leonard Piazza says party affiliation is changing. The number of new Democrats on the book is down... Republican registration... and those in other parties has increased.
An unidentified truck driver survived a crash Tuesday morning on Interstate 80.... only to be killed by a hit and run trucker. Police say the initial accident took place in the eastbound lane between the Mifflinville and Congyngham exits in Nescopeck Township. The driver of a big rig surviving a crash down an embankment in Nescopeck Township... but after climbing the embankment... he was struck and killed by a second truck. That trucker fleeing the scene of the accident.
Thousands of people are expected to be on hand at Berwick's Test Track Park on South Eaton Street this weekend for Riverfest. It's the boro's way of celebrating it's 225th anniversary... and to get people to come to the park so say's boro Manager Shane Pepe. In addition to arts and crafts... and a battle of the bands contest... the American Power Boat Association will race boats on the Susquehanna each day.
Marcellus Domestic Violence
The Marcellus Shale boom is having a direct effect on domestic violence services in Pennsylvania according to those who provide those services. The lack of affordable housing has long been a barrier that victims face in trying to flee abuse. Ellen Kramer of the Pennsylvania Coalition Against Domestic Violence, says the Marcellus Shale boom has brought an influx of new residents into the state. She says that's led to skyrocketing rents, and hotels and motels booked solid. Kramer adds domestic violence programs were already struggling to meet growing needs prior to the Marcellus boom.
The Pennsylvania Emergency Management agency says those folks who lost their jobs due to Hurricane Irene and Tropical Storm Lee may be eligible for disaster unemployment assistance. However, a PEMA spokesperson says if you live in Columbia or Montour Counties... you have until until Friday to apply for the assistance by calling 1-877-345-3382.
Kings College in Wilkes – Barre has started a juvenile mentoring program. It's open to non – violent juvenile offenders... and they will be guided by 20 Kings mentors. The program backed by the Luzerne County District Attorney's and public defenders office... as well as community groups.
