Flood / Gordner

Five State Senators say they will introduce a comprehensive, bipartisan legislative package deigned to bring relief to those affected by the flooding of Tropical Storm Irene and Lee. The group is being led by Senator John Gordner of Berwick who viewed the devastation of Columbia County first hand. Senator Gordner is being joined by Lisa Baker... John Yudichak and John Blake from the Wyoming Valley... as well Gene Yaw from Lycoming County.

 

AGAPE / Lowe

The work of AGAPE continues... as they've become the clearing house for volunteers working on flood recovery. AGAPE's Kathy Lowe says needs of the flood victims change every day.... and now it's the need for box fans. If you have a box fan or two you're not using.... drop it off at AGAPE on East 7th Street... across from the YMCA.

 

Schools

Bloomsburg Area School District staff and students... are heading back to the classroom today... following the closing of the district due to flooding. And with the Bloomsburg Fair canceled... school will be in session the week of the 24th. The Press – Enterprise is reporting in Tuesday's edition that Central and Berwick will stick to their original schedule... and will take off the traditional fair week. At Central... nearly a quarter of the district's faculty had booked vacations for fair week... and Superintendent Harry Mathais says bringing in substitutes would not be productive.

 

Murder trial

The murder trial of a Shickshinny man is expected to get underway today in Luzerne County Court in Wilkes – Barre. 59 – year old John Stone is accused of using a hatchet to murder his girlfriend... Katherine Tabit... in October of 2010. At the time... police said the two argued... and Tabit was headed to her home in Kingston... when Stone allegedly killed her at his home in the 100 – block of Canal Street.

 

Bloom Firemen

Bloomsburg firemen responding to two activated alarms overnight. The first one in the 300 – block of Lightstreet road last night.... then shortly after midnight... an activated alarm in the 800 – hundred block of Old Berwick Road. No fires were found.

 

PennDOT

Tropical Storm Lee may be long gone but PennDOT is still adding up the damage. PennDOT expects damage from flooding earlier this month to exceed 100 million dollars. The hardest hit area is District Three... which includes Columbia and Montour Counties. The problems range from entire bridges and sections of road swept away to minor shoulder washouts.

 

Teacher

Students and teachers in the Mahanoy Area School District are mourning the lost of one of their own. 51 – year old Jeff Donnelly of Barnesville... a district teacher... died over the weekend when an SUV collided with his motorcycle on a rural road. Police say the driver of the SUV may have been driving under the influence.

 

Gas Prices

Gas prices across northeastern Pennsylvania are either holding steady or maybe dropping a bit. The Triple – A Fuel Gauge report out Tuesday shows that... on the average... self – serve, unleaded regular is selling for $3.58 – a - gallon. That's the same price as yesterday. A week ago... gas was selling for an average of $3.62 a gallon.
