One of Columbia County's largest employers is closing up shop. We broke the news Thursday that R-R Donnelley book publishing plant on Old Berwick Road will be closing by late October. That is expected to place an estimated 300 people on the unemployment line. With the county's unemployment rate at 7.7%... Columbia – Montour Chamber of Commerce President Fred Gaffney says the loss of jobs could have a major effect. The plant has been a staple in Columbia County manufacturing for the past 40 – years or so under different owners.
With Hurricane Irene putting a bulls eye on the northeast... it still too early to tell what it's effect will be on Columbia and Montour Counties. The Pennsylvania Emergency Management Agency in Harrisburg is asking all of us to be prepared.. such as having enough essentials to get us through a couple of days of bad weather. Irene is now a category three storm and is barreling up the east coast... with a landfall expected in the Carolina's late Saturday night. It is forecast to brush the Jersey coast Sunday and could have a direct hit on New York City.
It's looking a bit better for the Pennsylvania economy... now that revenue collection stats are in for July... the first month of Governor Corbett's budget. They total 1 – point – seven billion dollars. That word coming from State Representative David Millard of Millville... appearing on the Thursday Edition of the WHLM Morning Buzz. Millard says if revenue collections remain on target... the state should be able to fund this years budget without a problem.
A Millville man is in the Columbia County Prison after he allegedly assaulted a second man Thursday afternoon. Bloomsburg State police say 54 – year old Keith Gordner was working on a bathroom at the Pen Col Dairy in Greenwood Township shortly before 3 O'clock when 36 – year old Benjamin Wolfe allegedly assaulted Gordner in an unprovoked attack. Gordner called police... .and Wolfe was captured a short time later. Wolfe was arraigned and sent to the Prison in Bloomsburg on $10,000 bail.
WB Cop Contract
Police who work for the City of Wilkes – Barre... in Luzerne County... have a new, five – year contract in hand. It calls for pay raises of 3% a year.... and a change in health benefits expected to save the city about $100,000 annually. Police Benevolent Association President Phillip Myers called the new contract a fair deal... for both the PBA members... and the city.
Hazle Twp. Robbery
Authorities in the Hazleton area are looking for a man who robbed the Shell gas station and convenience store early Thursday morning. State Police say a man strolled into the business on Route 924... ordering the clerk to give him the cash in the register. The clerk complied... handing over a couple of hundred dollars. Police say the man was wearing an orange hoodie.
State officials are scratching their heads over a lack of grant applications from some of the state's neediest schools. According to Pennsylvania's Secretary of Education, some 140-schools across the state are eligible for federal grant money but only 40-schools applied. Of those, 26 were awarded money.
Little League World Series
The magical month of August for the Keystone All – Stars from Clinton County ended Thursday night as they squared off against California in the Little League World Series in South Williamsport. The final California 2... the All - Stars nothing. Now... California goes on to play Montana Saturday. The winner goes to the final for the Little League title.
High School Football
The high school football season kicks off a week from Friday, and all area teams play their final preseason scrimmage this weekend. Friday night, Berwick is at home against Central Dauphin, Bloomsburg is at home against Mahanoy Area, Southern Columbia is at home against Milton, and Central Columbia is at Northwest. Saturday, Danville is at Canton and Columbia - Montour Vo - Tech is at home against Holy Redeemer.
