RR Donnelley to Close

An estimated 350 – to – 400 people will be out of work by the end of October... now that word of the closing of the R-R Donnelley publishing plant is making the rounds.

Reliable sources telling WHLM Radio News that the first and thirds shifts were given the word Thursday morning... with the second shift has yet to hear the details of the closing. Efforts to reach Donnelley officials at the Old Berwick Road book binding plant were not available for comment... but were told to call corporate headquarters in Chicago. There has yet to be a reply from a Donnelly spokesperson. What is known is that the plant will close on or about October 24th... since a sixty day notice is required in order to inform local and state government officials. No word yet as to how the nearly 400 layoffs will effect Columbia County's unemployment rate..

 

Sex Charges

Two people are in the Columbia County Prison after they were arrested on sex – related charges. 27 – year old Daniel Galindo of Orangeville and 23 – year old Christine Allen of Nescopeck are accused of forcing two children to allegedly strip and simulate sex. The Press – Enterprise is reporting in Thursday's edition... the allegations against the pair surfaced when one of the kids told her mother what happened in a home in the 400 block of East 5th Street in Berwick. Galindo and Allen are charged with two counts of sexual exploitation and two counts of indecent assault.

 

Leslie Bryden

The Labor Day weekend is the traditional start of political campaigns... and in Columbia and Montour County... it's no different. Democrat Leslie Bryden and Republican Tom Leipold square off in the November election for the office of District Attorney... the office charged with the prosecution of those arrested. Bryden says it's not a numbers game... and there are program to get people out of jail. Ms. Bryden... who is a Bloomsburg attorney... making her remarks on the Wednesday edition of the WHLM Morning Buzz.

 

Farm Accident

A father and son from Northumberland County are in the Lehigh Valley Hospital... after suffering burns in a farming accident near Turbotville on Wednesday. Todd and Jesse Bixler were removing a gas tank... when sparks from a metal grinder caused an explosion. Fumes from near by gas cans also caught fire. Jesse Bixler is a senior at Warrior Run High School... and authorities say he was burned over 90% of his body.

 

Bridge Open

A bridge over Fishing Creek... near Lightstreet is back open to traffic. The two – lane bridge on Back Branch Road at the Scott – Mt. Pleasant Township line was open Wednesday. Back Branch Road is used by people who live in Mt. Pleasant Township to get to interstate 80... or drive to Bloomsburg. The rehab project cost PennDOT an estimated $616,000.... and was the first make over of the bridge since the Agnes Flood of 1972.

 

PD Award

The Bloomsburg Police Department has received a recent "atta – boy" in the way officers enforce underage drinking laws and education. Police Chief Leo Sokoloski says awards were issued recently by the Pennsylvania Commission on Crime and Delinquency... and the office of Juvenile Justice... and dealt with the way the department spent government grants. The award was handed out during a conference in Orlando, Florida.

 

Sink Holes

If you're headed towards the Harrisburg area today... you might find it slow – going along Routes 11 and 15 in Snyder County. Several sinkholes have opened up on the busy highway. One lane of traffic was closed between Shamokin Dam and Selinsgrove when a hole opened in the roadway while crews were repairing a leaking pipe which washed away some ground causing the holes to develop. In addition to the initial sink hole... two others opened up as well.

 

Homicide by Vehicle

A Luzerne County teenager has been charged with homicide following a crash last month near Mountain Top. 16 – year old Adam Fredmund is charged with homicide by vehicle. Fredmund and some friends were on a joy ride in his SUV... when he lost control and crashed. The impact killing 16 – year old Brian Madry of Fairview Township. Now... Fredmund is in a Northampton County detention center waiting to appear in court next Wednesday.

 

New Jobs

New jobs are headed to the Hazleton area... in Luzerne County... thanks to an online cigar retailer. New Global Marketing is now operating out of Kingston, New York... but it's currently renovating a 25,000 square foot building in the CAN DO Corporate Center near Drums. New Global will start off by employing up to 40 people... but company CEO Greg Fox believes that number will expand to 60. New Global and Bestcigarprices.com hope to be up and running out of the Drums location in October.

 

Phils / Mets

Nick Evans went 3-for-4 with four RBI's, including a three-run homer in the first inning, as the New York Mets topped the Philadelphia Phillies, 7-4. on Wednesday. Kyle Kendrick taking the loss for the Phils. Philadelphia has the day off... but a weekend series... starting Friday... is on tap with the Florida Marlins at Citizens Bank Park.
