School to Open
It's hard to believe summer vacation for school students across Columbia and Montour Counties is nearly over. The doors at the Central Columbia School District on Old Berwick Road will be open for the 2011 - 2012 school year next Wednesday. Superintendent Harry Mathais says everyone in the district has been working hard to make the opening day a success. Meantime, Dr. Mathais says they've be able to weather the budgetary storm for now... but the district still lost an estimated $900,000 in revenue... an issue the board and the superintendent will keep a close eye on.
North Centre Fire
A State Police fire marshal will try to determine what caused a blaze which destroyed a pool house on the Irzyk property on Hosler Road. The Press – Enterprise is reporting volunteers from five different departments were dispatched to the scene.... that after smoke was seen coming from the building. The structure measured 20 by 20... and it's believed the fire began in the sunroom area.
One of the must do events takes place Saturday in downtown Bloomsburg. The fourth annual ArtFest gets underway Saturday morning... when Center Street.. from Main to 3rd is closed to traffic... and artisans strut their stuff. ArtFest 2011 continues through the early evening hours on Saturday on Centre Street.
You won't find former Luzerne County Judge Michael Toole serving on the bench... ever. The state Court of Judicial Discipline formally removed Toole from the bench... even telling him he can't hold judicial office for the rest of his life. The 51 – year old Toole is currently in jail in Minnesota... serving a prison term on a federal tax and corruption conviction. He's not expected out of prison until 2013.
The attorney for former Luzerne County Judge Mark Ciavarella has filed an appeal for his conviction and sentence. Attorney William Ruzzo took his request to the third circuit court of appeals. He also requested Ciavarella be declared indigent... so taxpayers can pick up the tab for his appeal. Ciavarella was sentenced earlier this month to 28 – years in prison in that so called “cash for kids” scheme... in which he sent juveniles to for – profit detention centers built by his associates. In return... he got hundreds of thousands of dollars in cash.
Wilkes – Barre Theaters
For sale.... the Movies 14 theater complex at University Corners in Wilkes – Barre. In essence... that cities Chamber of Commerce is putting its toe in the water... since it owns a portion of the complex. Asking price is 8 – and – a – half million dollars. Whatever the case... the movie theaters will remain intact until 2026. The entertainment venue sees about 500,000 people go through it's turnstiles on an annual basis.
