Electrical Fire

Bloomsburg firemen were out on the street shortly before 5:30 Tuesday morning. They were called to a home at 183 East 11th. That...after a ceiling fan in a bathroom malfunctioned. Damage was minimal...with firemen using fans to clear smoke from the home.

 

Social Security Office

If you try and use the services of the Social Security office on Market Street in Bloomsburg after 3:30 in the afternoon... you're out of luck. New hours for the staff to meet the public is from 9:00 AM through 3:30 PM. The reason... congressional budget cuts totaling a billion dollars is forcing not only the Bloomsburg office... but other Social Security offices around the country to cut back on hours.

 

Checkpoints

As we told you Monday... police officers from across the region will be out this weekend... establishing DUI checkpoints. The North Central Highway Safety Network will be coordinating the efforts with Columbia County police departments. The organization's David Everly says there are a number of factors leading up to exactly where the checkpoints will be established such as data from a particular township. However, it's expected cops will be targeting State Route 487... as well as 11 and 42.

 

Distinguished Citizen

Time is slowly running out to nominate an individual for the annual Robert Pursel distinguished citizen award. It's given yearly by the Danville Chapter of the American Red Cross. Chapter Executive Director Deanna Hollenbach says the recipient of the award will be announced November 5th.

 

Representative Lynda Culver

State Representative Lynda Culver... a Republican from Sunbury... will hold the first of a series of town hall meetings across her district Tuesday night. She will appear at the Hummels Wharf Fire Company for residents who live in Shamokin Dam and Monroe Township. The town hall meeting gets underway at 6 O'clock.

 

McAdoo Cops

The Borough of McAdoo... near Hazleton... has hired two part – time police officers. The council's voting was overwhelming to hire the pair to bring the department up to four part – time officers.... and three full time employees. The new hires will assure McAdoo will receive round – the – clock police coverage.

 

Robbery Suspect

A 17 – year old teenager... accused of robbing three people last week in Edwardsville... in Luzerne County... is now in jail. Adrian Lucy is being held on $25,000 bond. However, there is a twist in the story... one of the three being held up on Roosevelt Street... grabbed and ax... attacking Lucy and the second robbery suspect. With Lucy behind bars... police say his partner Timothy Drakes is still on the loose.

 

Gas Prices

Gas prices across northeastern Pennsylvania... including in Columbia and Montour Counties... continues to fall. A check by the Triple – A this morning shows that the average price for a gallon of self – serve, unleaded regular is $3.59. That's down a penny from Monday... and eight cents lower than it was a week ago. Pump prices are expected to continue to drop.... as long as crude oil prices remain stable.

 

Cop Hearing

A hearing has been postponed for a former State Trooper who is alleged to have a sent nude video of himself to a person on a webcam that he believed was a 13 – year old girl. Instead... 44 – year old Douglas Sversko of Lewisburg was dancing nude to an undercover agents. The hearing for Sversko was to have taken place today in Dauphin County Court. But now... it's been postponed until September 19th. Sversko retired out of the Milton barracks... and is allowed to collect $3,000 a month in pension benefits.

After a day off... the Philadelphia Phillies are back at Citizens Bank Park to begin a mid week series with the Arizona Diamondbacks. Roy Halladay is expected to take the mound against Arizona.
