Berwick Disturbance

A disturbance outside a Berwick home early this morning sent at least one person to the hospital. Reports from the scene indicated a large number of people gathered in front of 233 Cemetery Street... between Vine and Mulberry shortly before 2:30 this morning. Berwick police calling for backup from other agencies. At least one person was sent to the hospital for injuries sustained in the fight early this morning in Berwick.

 

Ciavarella Sentence

It's going to be a generation before former Luzerne County Judge Mark Ciavarella gets out of prison. In Scranton Thursday... Ciavarella being handed a 28 – year sentence in that so – called “Cash for Kids” scheme he ran out of his office at the Luzerne County Courthouse. In essence... he would sentence teenagers to a for – profit detention center in exchange for hundreds of thousands of dollars in cash. No word where he'll serve his time. Ciavarella's attorney says the sentence will be appealed.

 

Verizon Strike

Roughly 45,000 Verizon workers remain off the job and on picket lines nearly a week after a strike was called by the Communication Works of America. In Bloomsburg... a handful of CWA members are walking the picket line. Tony DeAngelo of the CWA local union out of Hazleton appearing on the Thursday edition of the WHLM Morning Buzz says the union is waiting to sit down and talk. Informational picketing took place at the fountain on the square in Bloomsburg... as well as the Verizon building on Third and Center Streets. The walkout involves the company's landline business. The wireless side of the company is not effected.

 

Distinguished Citizen

It began in 1995.... the Danville Chapter of the American Red Cross handing out the Distinguished Citizens award for those individuals who have made a significant impact and contributions to the area. Executive Director Deanna Hollenbach says that first award went to Robert Pursel. The award is named in Mr. Pursel's honor. It will be awarded during a holiday event at the Danville Elks Club on November 5th.

 

Truck into Restaurant

Three people are hospitalized after a pick up truck went through the wall at a Luzerne Count restaurant last night. Authorities say the driver of the truck was doing donuts in an adjacent parking lot... when he lost control of his truck... smashing through the wall of the Red Rooster Pancake House on State Route 118... where it intersects with Route 29... near Hunlock Creek. Two people sitting at a booth were injured... as well as the driver.

 

Officer Down

An autopsy is set to be preformed today on a Lehigh Valley police officer who died after being shot Thursday afternoon. 31 - year old Robert Lasso was responding to a report of a disturbance in Freemansburg when he was gunned down. Police have taken a 46 - year old suspect into custody... and he will be charged with murder. Lasso joined the department in 2004.

 

Senator Toomey
Pennsylvania freshman U-S Senator Pat Toomey is among the 12 so-called super-committee members charged with coming up with a solution to cut the federal deficit by more than a trillion dollars. Mr. Toomey said he'd like to see the tax base broadened and the tax rate lowered to promote economic growth.
