Special Session

The State House will be graveled into special session Monday to deal with a number of issues... including restoring money for legislative operation... vetoed last month by Governor Corbett. Also... according to state Representative David Millard is trying to deal with pension reform. Two plans could surface... the first... a hybrid 401K type plan for new employees... the second expected to be proposed by Rep. Glen Grell... a so – called “three bucket” approach to solve the $50 – billion issue.

 

Revenue

The figures are out... and Pennsylvania collected $2.2 - billion in General Fund revenue for July... the first month of the 2014 – 15 fiscal year. That word from Secretary of Revenue Daniel Meuser. The biggest chunk of the money... coming from $862 – million in sale tax receipts... with personal income tax revenue checking in with $836 – million.

 

Ag Progress Days

August has arrived and that means Penn State's “Ag Progress Days" are just around the corner. Chuck Gill with Penn State Ag Sciences says the August 12th through 14th Ag Progress Days will feature a wide array of displays and hands-on experiences connected to farming, and that's something we should all care about. If you're in the industry, there will be trade displays...families can experience an up-close look at the farming process that brings food to their table. The event takes place in Rock Springs - that's about 9 miles from State College.

 

Red Cross Blood

The American Red Cross continues to look for donors who want to give a unit of blood. Colin Riccobon from the organization's Wyoming Valley office says donations... nationwide... as well as locally... have been off substantially during the spring and summer. I-80 Construction

Work gets underway Monday on Interstate 80 westbound... from the Buckhorn interchange to the Montour County line. That section of roadway has undergone a 2.6 – million road resurfacing project the past few weeks. The work is expected to be completed by the end of the day. The contractor will spent Monday performing permanent line painting and miscellaneous clean up work.

 

Butler Twp Fatal

A Glen Lyon man is dead when he rolled his SUV Saturday... while on W. Butler Drive near Hazleton. Authorities say 42 – year old Angelo Hardy was pronounced dead at an Allentown hospital. A passenger... 24 – year old Erica Mundo of Hazleton crawled from the wreckage in front of the Valley Regional East fire station and flown to Geisinger Wyoming Valley Hospital where she is listed in “fair” condition.

 

Scams

Times are tough, and a lot of people are having problems paying their bills...and now phone scammers are taking advantage of it. Phone scammers are making themselves out to be with the state Attorney General's office to collect debts. The A-G's office says it would never initiate such a call, so don't give out any information and just hang up. Another scam involves tech-support, in which callers allege they detected a virus on their victim's computer, and offering tech support to get login and password information, and in some cases credit card information.
 

PUC Disclaimer

A state House Republican wants ads for wine and liquor sold in state stores to come with a friendly reminder. “This ad paid for by you, the taxpayers of Pennsylvania"... that's the disclaimer state Rep Stephen Bloom wants to add to all Liquor Control Board advertisements. Bloom says the agency spent five-point-eight million dollars on advertising last year, money that could otherwise have gone to the commonwealth. Even though the LCB is funded by its sales revenue and not by tax dollars, Bloom says the agency is still a taxpayer resource.

 

Theft

State Police in Frackville say they're searching for the burglar who broke into the Ringtown area home of a police officer. Gone are uniform shirts. However, the they're from Frackville, Ashland and Butler Township... three previous part – time jobs the officer has held. He now is a full – timer with the Mt. Carmel PD. Also gone... a tub of sports memorabilia and a baseball card collection. Know anything about the burglary... call state police at Frackville.

 

Sherman Hills

A man suspected of stabbing another man over the weekend is in police custody. Jose Hernandez is accused of the stabbing Friday night at the Sherman Hills apartment complex. The man who was stabbed is listed in critical condition at a Wilkes – Barre hospital... while Hernandez left the hospital.

Police have yet to file charges in the case.

 

Water Conservation

The Borough of Conyngham has received a $4,600 grant from the League of women voters of Pennsylvania. It's designed to raise awareness of the need of conserving water. A group known as the Friends of the Nescopeck... will educate local officials the importance of improving the water quality and conserving the water in Little Nescopeck Creek.

 

Wilkes – Barre Burglary

Still no suspects in custody with the burglary of the Tropical Palms restaurant in Wilkes – Barre. Police say it happened early Saturday morning... when someone smashed the front window. Once inside... the burglar broke open a jukebox... and stole money.

The Philadelphia Phillies were taken to the woodshed by the Washington National's Sunday afternoon. The Nat's defeating the Phil's 4 to nothing. The Phillies have the day off. They'll begin a three game series with the Houston Astros Tuesday night at 7:05. You can catch all the action starting with the pre – game show at 6:30 on the WHLM Stations.

 

Other Games

The Arizona Diamondback defeated the Pittsburgh Pirates 3 to 2... New York Yankees powered by the Boston Red Sox 8 to 7... and the San Francisco Giants blanked the New York Mets 9 to nothing.

 

Pete Van Wren

Funeral services will be held this week for long – time Atlanta Brave broadcaster Pete Van Wieren. He died of cancer over the weekend at his Atlanta – area home. Van Wieren was teamed with the late Skip Carey for 33 season... bringing the nation Braves baseball on SuperStation WTBS.

Dale Earnhardt, Jr. wins Sunday's GoBowling.com NASCAR Cup Series event at the Pocono Raceway in Long Pond.
