Columbia County District Attorney Tom Leipold says Hemlock Township police officer Charles Dietterick was justified in trying to defend himself Monday night against an unruly truck driver. Investigators say Dietterick stopped Dan Hadean of Oklahoma City... stemming from problems with his 18 – wheeler that had just left eastbound I-80 at the Buckhorn exit. That's where Officer Dietterick and Hadean got into a tussle... with the truckers using pepper spray and a hammer to attack the officer. Cpl. Dietterick was forced to fire two shots... striking Hadean in the chest and stomach. He's recovering at Geisinger Medical Center... and is expected to be arrested and charged when he leave the hospital.
Latest Gubernatorial Poll
Senior citizens appear to be turning on Pennsylvania Gov. Tom Corbett. That information contained in a survey conducted by the Robert Morris University Polling Institute. Only 30.8 % of likely Pennsylvania voters have a favorable impression of Corbett, up from 29.4 % in February. Corbett, a Republican from Shaler, will be challenged by York businessman Tom Wolf, a former state Department of Revenue secretary, in November. Wolf trounced his three Democratic opponents in last week's primary.
Another round of severe storms knocked out power in the Harrisburg area Tuesday, as officials continue assessing damage from last week's storms. The Lieutenant Governor traveled to Elk County on Tuesday to look at damage from flooding caused when thunderstorms dumped up to five inches of rain last week. Meanwhile in Eastern PA, AAA Mid Atlantic has received over 100 insurance claims from car and home owners due to golf ball and even tennis ball size hail. It's not clear yet if either incident will qualify for federal disaster assistance.
The Columbia County Historical and Genealogical Society in Bloomsburg it's celebrating 100 years of operation... keeping the history of the county in one location. The Society's Bonnie Farver says their history began in 1914. The Society is located on the second floor of the Bloomsburg Public Library on Market Street... and are looking for volunteers to carry on the legacy of the County.
ARC Yard Sale
One of the biggest yard sales under one roof is now underway on Route 11 in Scott Township. It's the Animal Resource Center's primary fund raiser. The organization is accepting donations daily... and the ARC's Linda Bird says they're looking for furniture. The Animal Resource Center's yard sale runs through September in the building adjacent to the Digiplex Theaters.
Governor Tom Corbett says he disagrees with last week's court ruling that opened the door for gay marriage in Pennsylvania, but he respect the ruling and logic behind it. Governor Tom Corbett elected not to appeal the ruling by federal judge John Jones III, signaling the end to Pennsylvania's longstanding gay marriage ban. The governor says he disagrees with the decision but he still respects Judge Jones and his thought process. The governor says his decision not to file an appeal came down to the fact that he didn't think it would succeed and it would be costly to continue pursuing the case.
Government reform activists say they haven't forgotten state lawmakers' pledges to address the blind spots in Pennsylvania law on accepting gifts. State lawmakers and other officials are allowed to accept gifts as long as they report those valued at $250 or more... but legislators rushed to propose changes after reports naming five Philadelphia Democrats, four of them House members, who accepted money or gifts from an undercover informant working for state prosecutors. Since then, no new law has been passed, and Eric Epstein of Rock the Capital, says a new law is the only thing that will change behavior.
Hazleton Police are investigating a series of break – in's that are believed to be linked. The first taking place late Monday night at Hell's Kitchen at 13 North Broad Street. Hours later there was an attempted break – in at Smart Geek Systems at 18 North Broad... with a third burglary at Pour House Bar and Grille in the 100 block of Winters Avenue. No one is in custody and the investigation is continuing.
Wilkes – Barre Fire Ruled Arson
The fire that swept through a Wilkes – Barre home last month... killing a popular postal worker... was an act of arson. That's what investigators are saying in a fire which extensively damaged the home of Laurie Merritt and led to her death. No one has been arrested... but investigators are looking at her cell phone records.
Hazle Twp. Fire
A state police fire marshal will try and figure out what started a blaze in a house in Hazle Township Monday night. The fire at a house on Getz Drive... discovered around 8 PM. Fire crews from Luzerne and Schuylkill Counties were called to fight the flames. One man lives in the house, but he wasn't home when the fire started.
The weather was the only winner in local sports Tuesday with three playoff games postponed. The District 4 Class AA semifinal softball game between Central Columbia and Wellsboro will be played Wednesday at 5:30 at Elm Park in Williamsport. The Class A semi between Bloomsburg and Line Mountain will be played at 4 o'clock at the same site.
In baseball, the Bloomsburg- Athens District semifinal has been rescheduled for Thursday afternoon at 4:30 at Bowman Field in Williamsport.
The Berwick girls softball team takes on Tunkhannock Wednesday afternoon at Wilkes University in the District 2 Class AAA championship game.
After an hour and 22 minute rain delay... the Philadelphia Phillies home game with the Colorado Rockies got started Tuesday night. The final score... Colorado 6... the Phillies 2. The two teams meet again Wednesday night. Coverage on the WHLM Stations begins with the pregame show at 6:30.

In other games Tuesday night... The New York Mets downed the Pittsburgh Pirates 4 to 2... and The St. Louis Cardinals blanked the New York Yankees six to nothing.
In the NBA's Western Conference final series... The Oklahoma City Thunder downed the San Antonio Spurs 105 to 92. The win by OKC evens the best of seven series two games apiece.
In the NHL's Eastern Conference final series... the Montreal Canadiens defeated the New York Rangers 7 to 4. Despite the loss... the Rangers lead the series three games to two.
