Trailer Fire

A mobile home in a Briar Creek Township trailer court was extensively damaged by flames early Friday morning. Berwick firemen were called to the 7465 Route 11 shortly before 4 O'clock after someone discovered flames on the rear porch of a home. Berwick Fire Chief Bill Coolbaugh says the flames spread... extensively damaging the structure. It took Berwick volunteers an estimated 30 minutes to knock down the flames.

 

Susquehanna Valley Storm

A powerful thunderstorm storm... producing hail... rolled across the Susquehanna Valley Thursday afternoon. Steve Kaiser of Fairfield Dodge, Chrysler, Jeep on Route 11... witnessed the weather phenomenon... telling our media partner Newswatch 16 that an estimated 300 new and used cars were damaged. The storm also downed trees and power line around Strawberry Ridge and PPL Roads near Washingtonville. More damage assessments are to be made Friday.

 

Geisinger / Economic Impact

Danville – based Geisinger Health System is a major player in the economy of the Susquehanna Valley. According to a report out by The Hospital and Healthsystem Association of Pennsylvania... Geisinger has an annual economic impact of $7.4 – billion to the local, regional and state economies. The report goes on to say that as an employer of 21,000... and through a ripple effect.. GHS supports an estimated 37,000 jobs in the commonwealth.

 

Click it or Ticket

If you see more than the number of police officers on the street this weekend... especially during the overnight hours... there's a good reason for that. The nationwide “Click it or Ticket” campaign is on with cops using for folks not wearing their seat belts. But, whatever the case usage has increased... and Bloomsburg PD Sgt. Leonard Rogutski says that's attributed to education and current laws. Sgt. Rogutski said drivers of pick – up trucks... out on the streets between 9 PM and 2 the next morning are being targeted. The local “Click it or Ticket” campaign is funded by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration... doling out money to PennDOT which is filtered to local cop shops.

 

Montour County

Montour County employees may have had their personal information stolen. County commissioners telling our media partner Newswatch 16 a hacker got into the computers of a firm handling Montour County's payroll. It's the same firm that handles the payroll for Snyder County. Thus far... no one has been effected by the breach of security.

 

Abigail's Attic

A month after being affected by a fire which destroyed a neighboring restaurant... Abigail's Attic has reopened. The thrift store is an axillary of Geisinger Medical Center. They were shut down temporarily following a blaze last month which destroyed a steak restaurant. The attic's manager April Lease says the Medical Center came through with a lot of help. Abigail's Attic is now located at 322 Mill Street... in the heart of Danville's business district and is open Monday thru Friday

 

Hurricane Predictions

After last year's mild hurricane season, it looks like we can expect a near normal or below normal season this year with the expected formation of an El Nino suppressing formation of storms. The official prediction is for 8 to 13 named storms with 3 to 6 becoming hurricanes and one or two of them turning into major storms. But officials are emphasizing it only takes one to make landfall, like Andrew in 1992, to cause a disaster. They're urging people to be prepared, knowing what risk they face, where to go if evacuated and how to recover after a storm.

 

Holiday Weekend Traffic

Memorial Day weekend is upon us and you know what that means... heavy traffic is expected on all the highways and in particular, on the Pennsylvania Turnpike. An astounding two million vehicles are expected to use the PA Turnpike this Memorial Day weekend... and with such heavy volumes, drivers are being reminded to keep alert and stay focused as they travel. Hazleton Kids

The Luzerne County Children and Youth Services are investigating of kids being left home alone. A Hazleton school district truancy officer discovered kids aged 4, 3 and a baby left unattended in a home in the 500 block of Maple Avenue. A 14 – year older charged with watching the children was found asleep in a bedroom. No one was taken into custody and the case remains open.

 

Lawsuit

Shickshinny Mayor Beverly Moore is suing the Borough Council. Ms. Moore says the council is shutting her out of meetings.... not allowed to enter the borough building on Union Street... and isn't allow access to borough records without a right to know request. Ms. Moore is asking a judge to force the council to tell her when meetings take place... access to borough records... as well as the borough building. It's not known when the judge will make a decision in the Moore lawsuit.

 

Couple Captured

A couple wanted in connection with a Wilkes – Barre shooting has been captured in New Jersey. Tony and Terasa Ransom were wanted in connection with the shooting of Josue Vargas outside his Hutson Street apartment last week. Vargas was treated at a Wilkes – Barre hospital and released. It's not known when the Ransom's will be returned to Luzerne Custody.

Girls HS Softball

Paige Seacrest pitched a one hitter and Kimmy Hollister had two hits and a sacrifice fly to lead the Central Columbia softball team to a 2-0 win over Montoursville Thursday to advance to the District 4 Class AA semifinals. On Tuesday at Elm Park in Williamsport the Bluejays will face Wellsboro, a 10-5 winner over Southern Columbia.

 

In a District 4 Class A playoff game Bloomsburg defeated Benton 7 to 3...

 

Boys HS Baseball

In baseball, in a District 2 AAA playoff game Berwick downed Scranton Prep 8 to 2..

 

Track & Field

A number of area athletes will be competing for medals at the state high school track & field championships. They begin Friday morning and conclude Saturday afternoon at Shippensburg University.

 

PHL Phillies

In Miami on Thursday... the Philadelphia Phillies lost to the Marlins 4-3. Friday night the Phils open a weekend home series against the Dodgers. Coverage on the WHLM Stations begins with the pregame show at 6:30.

 

Other MLB Games

In other games Thursday... it was the Pittsburgh Pirates over the Washington National's 3 to 1... the New York Mets defeated the Los Angeles Dodgers 5 to 3... and the Chicago White Sox got by the New York Yankees 3 to 2.

 

NHL

In the NHL's Eastern Conference series Thursday night... the Montreal Canadiens defeated the New York Rangers 3 to 2. The Rangers continue to lead the series 2 games to 1.
