Voting Machine Problems

A rough start to primary day 2014 in Columbia County on Tuesday. A voting machine in Mifflin Township... and a machine in a Bloomsburg precinct failed to load candidate information properly. So... Columbia County Chief Registrar Matt Repasky went to a back up plan switching to the provisional ballots to be counted as paper ballots. The last minute wasn't a problem... and the paper ballots were counted last night without a hitch. No word why the improper candidate information loaded into the electronic voting machines.

 

Election Returns

It will be the two Toms.... Corbett verses Wolf. That's at the top of the November general election ballot... with York County Democratic Tom Wolf trying to unseat incumbent Republican Governor Tom Corbett. Wolf telling supporters the real work is just beginning. In Columbia County... unofficially... Wolf garnered 59 % of the votes cast by democrats... a 40 % edge over nearest competitor Rob McCord. But overall... County voting officials say turnout was light with 13 % of the registered voters casting ballots. Statewide... Wolf getting an estimated 58 % of the Democratic ballots cast.

 

Gay Marriage

Continuing a rush of rulings that have struck down marriage limits across the country, a federal judge in Pennsylvania on Tuesday declared the state’s ban on same-sex marriage to be unconstitutional.

The ruling was made by Judge John E. Jones III of Federal District Court in a decision posted on Tuesday afternoon. Pennsylvania is the last of the Northeast states with a ban on same-sex marriage, and if Tuesday’s ruling is not successfully challenged, it will become the 19th state to permit gay and lesbian couples to marry.

 

State Budget / Millard

Although it may be a downtime for many state legislators... Columbia County State Representative David Millard... and his colleagues on the House Appropriation Committee... are trying to figure out how to make ends meet and craft a proposed budget. Monthly tax revenues have been coming in lower than projected. Lawmakers are helping to fund several programs funded by the federal government that requires millions of matching state dollars.... money that sometimes isn't there.

 

Mausteller Update

A Bloomsburg Sprint car driver remains in the Geisinger Medical Center in Danville... recovering from injuries received during a race at the Selinsgrove Speedway Saturday night. Duane Mausteller sustained was injured when he collided with a car driven by Jamie Collard. Mausteller sustained head and leg injuries when the two cars collided during a feature race on the half – mile oval.

 

Tyler Duda

A 17 – year old Wyoming Valley man has pleaded guilty to charges of homicide by vehicle and involuntary manslaughter. Tyler Duda admits running down a pedestrian on West Union Street in Nanticoke last July. The guilty plea comes three weeks after his case was moved to Juvenile court. Duda could face time in juvenile detention center until he is 21.

 

Wilkes – Barre Shooting

Wilkes – Barre Police are looking for a coupled wanted in the shooting of a man late last week. Thresa and Tony Ransome are wanted on charges of allegedly shooting 27 – year old Josue Vargas of Wilkes – Barre. Vargas was on Hutson Street when he was shot. He was treated and released from a Wilkes – Barre hospital.

 

Memorial Travel

If you have travel plans for this Memorial Day weekend... you're not alone. The Triple A's Jenny Robinson says more people are hitting the road this weekend holiday... as compared to a year ago. Meantime... gas prices should be easing after a rise earlier in the spring. However, you'll pay more to fly... and hotel rates are going up.

High School Baseball

In the District 4 Class AA baseball playoffs Tuesday... Montoursville downed Southern Columbia

7 to 5. In District 2 Class AAA baseball the Berwick Bulldogs defeated North Pocono 3 to 1.

 

High School Softball

In a District 4 AA girls softball playoff game Montoursville blanked Columbia – Montour Vo – Tech 12 to nothing.

 

PHL Phillies

In the first game of their three game series in Miami Tuesday night... the Philadelphia Phillies held on to down the Miami Marlins 6 to 5. Game two is tonight at 7:10. Coverage on the WHLM Stations begins with the pregame show at 6:35.

 

Other MLB Games

In other games Tuesday night... it was the Baltimore Orioles over the Pittsburgh Pirates 9 to 2... the Chicago Cubs downed the New York Yankees 6 to 1... and the Los Angeles Dodgers defeated the New York Mets 9 to 4.

 

NBA

In the NBA's Eastern Conference final series last night... the Miami Heat got past the Indiana Pacers 87 to 83. The series is tied up at one game each.
